tanween

Assalam oalaikum,

In the beginning when the Holy Quran was compiled in a shape of a book the additional signs that we find these days were absent. This is because the Arabs could pronounce the words without any problem as it was their mother tongue. However, as the number of Non-Arabs who embraced Islam increased, the need arose to retain the pronunciation of the words. At this juncture, the additional signs and dots were added to Arabic to help the Non-Arabs to pronounce the huruf correctly. The 3 marks of inverted vowels in the Arabic writing are called the vowels of tanveen. The tanveen have a short vowel with a hidden Noon Saakin such as: do zabar, do zer and do pesh.
Go through the chart given below and practice the pronunciation. For example: Meem do zabar ‘man’, meem do zer ‘min, meem do pesh ‘mun’. The same goes for the rest of the huruf.
